Penny pregnant. Wrote and told my parents in Jamaica.

Honours degree in Zoology – which I flunked only obtaining a 3rd class honours.

Married Penny in Stokenham Church. Mike Adkins as best man. Stag night at the pub below Pilgrims with Dad, Chris, Mike, John Randolph.

Moved to Southampton, staying in a grotty flat with a bathroom accessed through their lounge. Got a job at Calor Gas where I worked all the hours I could to save for my MSc.

Started my MSc in Oceanography at the University of Southampton. Befriended Stuart White and together we searched for suitable accommodation – finding Bowden House in Bursledon and inviting Ken Massie and David Cram to join us. Ken brought along Frank as an extra.

James born in Southampton General Hospital after 28 hours labour. Weight 10 lbs 10 oz.

Penny got a job as an art teacher and James was looked after after only 6 weeks by an ex secretary of the oceanography department.
